It is no surprise that the obesity rate is steadily climbing. What may be surprising is the staggering rate in which childhood obesity is rising. This new trend has many doctors and parents not just concerned, bit downright worried!


What has many doctors worried about the obesity rate in children is that, just like adults, children will start experiencing diseases that in previous years was known only to adults. Such diseases include type II diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and hormonal imbalances. In addition, children who are obese are more likely to experience low self esteem and depression.


There are many factors for this rising rate of obesity in children. The family itself is over scheduled. Families no longer prepare meals at home and, if they do, they most likely prepare convenience meals. In addition, parents have allowed their children to spend more time in front of a screen, whether it be a computer, television, or other electronic device. Schools have also been eliminating more physical education programs. All of these factors add up to children who are inactive and unhealthy.


Helping a child who is obese needs to be a family affair. By cooking more healthy meals at home and being more active as a family, parents can greatly help their child beat obesity. One of the best ways to help children love exercise is to play with them on playground equipment. Playground equipment is like a gym for children, only more fun! It provides children with aerobic activity and strength training, without feeling like they are exercising. Playground equipment really makes exercising fun! In addition, taking children to a public playground allows them to socialize with other children and use their imaginations.



In today’s hectic world, it may seem as if getting healthy and getting our children healthy is impossible. However, making small changes can lead to big results when it comes to overall health. By making sure that screen time is limited, food choices are healthy, and exercise is fun, children and their families can beat this obesity epidemic. We owe it to ourselves and we owe it to our children to get healthy!
